OVERVIEW OF POSITION

The Junior Research Analyst (JRA) position with our Oil & Gas Practice provides an avenue for high caliber individuals to enter our Research/Specialist track and build an interesting career based on deepening their existing knowledge and understanding of the Oil & Gas sector.

The primary job responsibilities for JRAs fall into two categories:  (1) client service and client development support; and (2) knowledge development. These are described in detail below. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Client service and client development support.  As a JRA, you will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing information from a broad variety of sources.  You will develop client-ready industry overviews, case materials, financial analyses, and other knowledge products in support of consultant teams.

You will be responsible for working with consultants to scope and prioritize their research needs, identifying the key issues through discussions with requestors, and, on that basis, determining the most appropriate, cost-effective, and timely research solutions.  You will then gather the necessary raw information using a broad spectrum of sources and will organize, analyze, and synthesize the findings into targeted products.  These end products may be in the form of single exhibits, written summaries, basic fact packs, and spreadsheets. 

Knowledge development.  You are encouraged to build a solid knowledge base, developing an appropriately broad understanding of the relevant structure, players, and trends in your topic area(s).  A solid understanding of a specific content area and its salient issues form the basis for advancement in the Research career track.  To help build your expertise, you will develop basic fact packs, summaries, and assigned portions of larger documents in your area of focus.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED

General qualifications

You will need to demonstrate a clear desire to work in a research role, and an interest in global issues concerning the oil and natural gas industry.

Specific qualifications

  • Good problem-solving, analytical, and quantitative skills
  • Solid understanding of economic, financial, and general business concepts and terminology
  • Professional attitude and service orientation
  • Teamwork; A collaborative nature is essential for success in this role.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to take initiative and responsibility
  • Strong IT skills; preferably with proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint

Education

An undergraduate degree from a respected institution with demonstrated analytical expertise is required. Offers from applicants with post-graduate qualifications are also welcome.

Previous experience

Relevant industry or research experience in an energy-related or another scientific environment would be advantageous, but not essential. 

Training

To enable research analysts to meet the requirements of their new role and to support their professional and personal growth, we use a mixture of formal and informal training:

  • Formal training – In their first months, analysts attend a rigorous induction program tailored to their role. The objective is to get to know our knowledge network and to get quickly up to speed on available sources, frameworks, and systems. During their career with this company,  they receive further comprehensive training in research and communications skills to fully support their analyses and knowledge-building development.
  • On-the-job training – In their day-to-day role analysts can expect coaching from colleagues, in addition to training on our global knowledge databases and networks.
